On February 25th, 2016, The International Symposium on Constructing an Inclusive and Efficient International Development Aid and Cooperation System was held in SEPKU Taikang Lecture Hall. The symposium was sponsored by China Development Research Foundation and School of Economics, Peking University, and organized by Bozhi Economic and Social Development Institute and Center for Human and Economic Development Study Center.
Amartya Sen, laureate of the 1998 Nobel Prize in economics, professor of Harvard University, addressed a keynote speech on the conference. Over 20 experts from Peking University, Renmin University of China, China Agricultural University, United Nations Development Program, Asian Development Bank and Finance Center for South-South Cooperation, spoke at the meeting.
On the opening ceremony, Professor Sun Qixiang, Dean of SEPKU, and Mr. Lu Mai, Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation, made opening remarks on behalf of the sponsors respectively. Dean Sun said constructing an inclusive and efficient international development aid and cooperation system would contribute to the solution of many puzzles under the “post-crisis” era, such as severe poverty in many developing countries, rising inequality and social unrest. Secretary General Lu Mai believed that China’s modernization should be shared. He said under the inclusive and efficient international development aid and cooperation system, China’s development provides opportunity, confidence and encouragement for other developing countries. The seminar opening ceremony was presided over by Vice Professor Qin Xuezheng, Assistant Dean of SEPKU.
After the ceremony, Secretary General Lu Mai chaired the round table discussion on “International Development and Aid System Scanning”. Four keynote speakers delivered speeches around this topic.
The keynote speech was followed by the ceremony of appointing Prof. Amartya Sen as the Honorary Professor of SEPKU. In the ceremony, Prof. Zhang Zheng, the Vice Dean of SEPKU, presented Prof. Sen’s academic contribution and officially awarded the certificate of appointment on behalf of the school. He said Prof. Sen is among one of the greatest philosophers at our time, and is considered the conscience of economics and an encyclopedic scholar. Prof. Sen has made great contributions in economics, morality philosophy, and political science. In view of his extraordinary achievements in the above fields, the School of Economics at Peking University decides to confer Honorary Professorship to Professor Sen.
After the keynote speech, followed round-table discussions on “South-South Cooperation Under International Political and Economic Order Adjustment” and “The G20, International Development Cooperation and China`s Foreign Aid” respectively.
