On April 7, the 100^th CCISSR biweekly seminar was held in SEPKU. Mr. Ma Yongwei, First President of China Insurance Regulatory Commission, and Professor Sun Qixiang, Dean of SEPKU, held a dialogue on the topic of “The History of Chinese Insurance Industry from 1994-2002”.

Professor Sun first reviewed the development of China’s insurance industry when she transferred from macroeconomics to insurance coverage. Mr. Ma Yongwei summarized and analyzed the problems faced in the reform process of state-owned insurance company and he took PICC as an example. Secondly, both Mr. Ma and Professor Sun shared their thoughts on the reform of these companies. Then they expressed their views on the legal system construction and supervision of insurance. Professor Sun said regulation has never disappeared in the mature economies and the key point is to balance the relationship between the regulation and development. She added that the perfection of the way of thinking, the means and the methods of our country’s insurance regulatory still have a long way to go. At last, they discussed the positive role that the insurance plays in China’s WTO accession negotiations.

To learn and respect history is an excellent tradition in more than 100 years’ history of SEPKU. From the guests’retrospect of Chinese insurance, we got a clear and rational understanding of China’s insurance industry development and reform path. The 100^th CCISSR biweekly seminar ended successfully in the audience’s warm applause.
