SEPKU held 2020 Overseas Forum&Second European Forum

  On the afternoon of October 17, 2020 Overseas Forum&Second European Forum of the School of Economics at Peking University  was successfully held online. This forum was co-organized by School of Economics, Peking University and Oriel College, Oxford University. Under the theme of "THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL ECONOMY IN AN ERA OF COVID-19", the conference discussed in depth the uncertainties of economic development in the post-epidemic era and the new opportunities for cooperation and development among countries around the world. 

 

SEPKU held 2020 Overseas Forum&Second European Forum

 

  The forum was hosted by Assistant Professor Wu Zenan, Assistant to Dean  of the School of Economics at Peking University. Wu extended a warm welcome to the attendees. He pointed out that the COVID-19 epidemic has caused a huge impact on the world's economic development, which urges countries all over the world to cooperate to restore the economy in the post-epidemic era. This forum is committed to building a platform for communication and exchanges between academic circles in China and in Europe, and then to bringing the economic cooperation to a new level.

  Professor Qin Xuezheng, Vice Dean of the School of Economics at Peking University,  delivered an opening speech. He said that the continuous spread of the epidemic has brought more uncertainty to the international economic situation and development. With global economic integration, the impact of the COVID-19 on the global economy will continue to exist for some time, posing a large negative impact on the supply and demand of global labor market, international trade and other aspects. In view of this, countries around the world should strengthen bonds and cooperation to cope with the challenges jointly.

  After this, Christopher Bowdler, Associate Professor and Director of undergraduate teaching of Oriel College, Oxford University, delivered a speech. He believed that it is necessary to discuss economic cooperation and development issues in the post-epidemic era. He also emphasized that in recent years, the Oriel College of Oxford University and the School of Economics at Peking University have carried out a number of programs of teaching cooperation and scientific research exchanges, and the teachers and students of us two institutes have established a deep friendship. He firmly believed that this forum will become a landmark and important academic event in the process of further cooperation between us two institutes.

 

Associate Professor Christopher Bowdler delivered a speech

 

  During the keynote speech , Abby Adams-Prasel, Senior Research Fellow of New College, Oxford University and convener of Applied Microeconomics, analyzed the major impact of the COVID-19 on the labor market. She pointed out that the epidemic has exacerbated gender inequality in the labor market, that is, the labor participation rate of women has dropped significantly. Based on this, she gave several propositions on how to respond to the challenges in the labor market caused by COVID-19.

 

Associate Professor Abby Adams-Prasel delivered a keynote speech

 

  Liu Guoen, Professor of National School of Development, Peking University, conducted an in-depth analysis on the impact of COVID-19 on medical and health care. He further pointed out that under the normalized prevention and control, we should maintain the basic economic and social operation, paying extra attention to the important role played by grassroot medical organizations and community hospitals.

  Mathias Hoffman, Professor of Department of Economics, University of Zurich, discussed the impact of the epidemic on the banking industry. He believed that the COVID-19 is a major redistributive shock in the economic field, and it is important to  accelerate  the integration of banking industry, to establish a common deposit insurance system, and to encourage cross-border mergers of the banking industry.

 

Professor Mathias Hoffman delivered a keynote speech

 

  Klaus Adam, Professor of Economics at Nuffield College, Oxford University, discussed the monetary stabilization in the face of adverse macroeconomic trends. With detailed global macroeconomic data, he discussed four macroeconomic trends during the epidemic, and further analyzed the far-reaching impact of these trends on monetary policy.

  Professor Liu Minquan from the School of Economics, Peking University, discussed the establishment of the Epidemiologically Strong Governance Systems (ESGS)  and the improvement of the global health governance system, as well as the multi-level disaster response system and organization.

  Professor Graeme Roy from the University of Strathclyde focused on analyzing the impact of the epidemic on work styles and efficiency, and discussed the future development of home work in terms of macroeconomic background, inequality, workplace preferences of different subjects and roles, etc.

  After the first North American Forum held in New York, USA in December 2018, the first European Forum in Oxford, UK in August 2019, the Southeast Asia Forum in Indonesia in November 2019, and the Second North American Forum in San Diego, USA in January 2020, this is another overseas forum hosted by School of Economics at Peking University. This forum brought together top scholars around the world to discuss the prospects and opportunities of economic development in the post-epidemic era, and established an important platform for teachers and students to get into touch with international cutting-edge research results, to promote communication and exchanges between the Chinese and European academic circles, and to construct a new international knowledge community.
